Purple bud variety of Camellia Formosensis or ‘ShanCha’ is a native Taiwanese tea tree variety. It’s been always known between the farmers but purple variety was rarely used because of its strong wild nature it was not suitable to make Ooolng. Therefore it was overlooked.
Only in early 2000s when Taiwan started to produce more red teas specially around Sun Moon Lake and purple variety was rediscovered. Since then it’s become one of the more common assamica types cultivated around Taiwan.
It has woody aroma with some honey scent and slight but pleasant astringency. It’s usually processed in summer (June to September) because that’s is the time plant shows its woody character the most plus is the time to be bitten by bugs to produce honey scent. Same like with oriental beauty tea.
Aroma it’s lighter and less fancy than the wild shan cha but it’s over all very pleasant and satisfying tea with unique and pretty strong boost energy.
This tea comes from organic farm in Pinglin that has been growing organically for over 30 years. It’s only harvested once a year.
